Google Analytics 4 is Getting a Conversion Migration Tool.

This utility may be used to import Universal Analytics 3 objectives into GA4.

Google is now offering a conversion transfer tool to help you migrate your current Universal Analytics objectives to Google Analytics 4. This may be found in the Conversions part of your GA4 settings page, under the Setup Assistant tab.

This is how it works. The goals migration tool allows you to rapidly reproduce qualifying objectives from your Universal Analytics property as conversion events in your Google Analytics 4 property using the goals migration tool. I haven't seen it yet, but I anticipate seeing the import tool shortly. On Twitter, Charles Farina shared screenshots of how it works:

How Does the Google Analytics 4 Tool Work?

The goals migration tool accomplishes the following in your associated Google Analytics 4 property for each qualified Universal Analytics goal you select:

  • Creates a new rule for the Create event.
  • Declares the newly formed event to be a conversion.

There are various distinct objective kinds that Universal Analytics properties can have. The tool may be used to move these two sorts of goals:

  • When a user arrives at a specified page, such as a "thank you" or "confirmation" page, the destination objective is achieved.
  • When a user initiates a certain event, such as a social referral, video play, or ad click, it is referred to as an event goal.

Pages/Screens per session objectives, Duration goals, Smart goals, and any goal that employs regular expressions cannot be instantly imported and will not display in the tool.

Per normal Google Analytics 4 property, you may define up to 30 custom conversion events.

You must have the Editor role on your account to utilize the goals migration tool.

  • Click Admin in Google Analytics.
  • Make sure your preferred account is selected in the Account column. (If you have only one Google Analytics account, it will be picked automatically.)
  • Select the Google Analytics 4 property that is presently collecting data for your website in the Property column.
  • Click Setup Assistant in the Property column.
  • Go to Import existing objectives from your associated Universal Analytics property under Conversions and click Get started.
  • Select which objectives you'd want to replicate as conversion events in the Import existing goals from your connected property panel.

When your selected objectives have been properly restored as conversion events in your Google Analytics 4 property, a confirmation notice will appear in the bottom left corner of your screen.

Why should we be concerned? You may use this tool to save time by not having to build up your objectives in GA4 from scratch. However, read the help text thoroughly to understand what this program will and will not import.
